International Arbitration in the Netherlands

Prof. Bastiaan van Zelst LLm LLm PhD (1981) holds the chair in Dispute Resolution and Arbitration at Maastricht University. He is also a practicing attorney at Amsterdam based law firm Van Doorne N.V. In his research, Van Zelst focuses on exploring alternatives to existing civil dispute resolution structures. He has investigated and published, amongst others, on Med-Arb (the combination of mediation and arbitration into one single dispute resolution process), (fundamental aspects of) unilateral option dispute resolution mechanisms, applications of arbitration in class action, and on automation in dispute resolution. Van Zelst’s research is of an international and interdisciplinary nature. Moreover, being both an academic and a practicing attorney allows Van Zelst to conduct research that is both of a fundamental nature and practically applicable. This is testified to by Van Zelst’s publication in a large variety of academic journals, varying from the European Law Journal to the Corporate Mediation Journal and from the Journal of International Arbitration to the Nederlands Juristenblad.
